Before you call
It helps to have these ready:
- Where the cracks or gaps are, and whether they've grown. Photos with a coin or tape measure for scale help.
- Which doors or windows stick, and since when.
- The year the house was built, and whether it's a slab or pier and beam, if you know.
- Any past foundation repair, with the paperwork if you have it. Warranties often transfer with the house.
If something looks dangerous
If a wall is bulging or leaning, a ceiling is sagging, or doors and windows have suddenly jammed after a storm or a leak, don't wait for an inspection. Keep people away from that part of the house, and if you smell gas or see a broken pipe, leave and call 911 or your utility from outside.
